Safety in the summer

For many companies entering the summer period can be historically, a slower time for business. Staff holidays, sporting events and the like often mean there is time during this period to catch up on staff training. It is an excellent opportunity to look at any shortfalls particularly with regards to Health and Safety, which during busier periods can be hard to fit into busy schedules. Also staff are more receptive to new ideas and changes whilst the summer “mood” persists.

Environmental Handling Systems can help your business by providing a common sense, pragmatic approach to Health and Safety. Whether its Display Screen Assessments, Manual Handling training for new / existing staff or preparing for Autumn and Xmas (are we the first to mention it already?) good planning and preparation now can help prevent costly accidents and litigation further down the line.

We offer afull range of training and consultancy services accross the UK and Ireland.

Moving forward from recession in the new financial year.

With many companies and businesses now entering the new financial year, it is an excellent time to stand back and take a view on staff training requirments that will be required. With the economy finally emerging from recession, it is imperative that your organisation is ideally placed in terms of staff training and awareness to take full advantage of the upturn.

Making sure that your business is not bogged down in paperwork can help free up more productive time for key staff and decision makers. It is not unusal for these people to be given addtional responsibilities such as Health and Safety issues and training, emergency evacuation procedures, procedure writing and updating and evaluating emergency evacuation plans and equipment such evacuation chairs.

In these busy times some companies may overlook the safety issues that surround goups of employess such as;
temporary staff, returners to work, maternity & pregnancy issues and new starters.

Some things to consider are;

Induction - Has the employee had a safety brief? What to do in the event of a fire? What are their responsibilities?

DSE - Did the employee get a proper assessment of their desk? Is the screen the correct height? Is the chair set correctly?

Manual Handling - Has the staff member lifting loads? Have they been trained? Do they know the risks?

Risk Assessment - Are there any hazards in the working area? Are members of the public at risk? What about slips and trips?

Fire Evacuation - Do staff know the evacuation plan and meeting points? Are they trained to use equipment such as Evac Chairs?

Most businesses will be aware they are strict penalties now for non compliance with current Health and Safety laws and pleading ignorance or a lack of funding for training will not be any form of defence.

Make sure you have taken all the necessary steps not only to protect your staff and your customers, but your company and its hard built reputation.
